About the history of the town and the hotel
Bandholm Hotel has its starting point in the life, which over the years has been in and around Bandholm town. Here the harbour has been the natural centre ever since the Middle Ages. The original old inn was appointed as royally priveledged in 1682.
In the middle of the 18th century there was a blossoming of the town, because of the discharging of grain and other farming articles from the harbour. That blossoming can be difficult to see today, but still it is part of how the town and the hotel has achieved their special identity and romantic style.
At its largest, the town had 53 shops. There were several banks, three groceries, a handfull of tailors and by the way; two hotels, of which Bandholm Hotel was considered the most distinguished and respectable.
Through the main street, there were more grain stores, of which Hvedemagasinet today is a well preserved example, well worth a visit.
The history of Bandholm is also closely connected to Knuthenborg, which has owned the main part of the town, including the harbor, still in the possession of Knuthenborg, together with other houses in town.
During a period of years Bandholm Hotel has been owned by Knuthenborg, also in 1886, when the present noble main building was built. A town and a hotel with much history.
